The increasing importance of context switching

November 2025

I realized something weird: I'm working like a McKinsey partner now.

Not the strategy part. The context switching part. Partners spend their days jumping between back-to-back meetings with different clients. They hold multiple contexts, switch constantly, never finish one thing before starting another. That was a senior skill.

Now I'm doing it because AI creates these gaps. I start a build, wait sixty seconds, flip to another project. Start another build, wait again, flip back. The tools force you to orchestrate multiple things at once.

You're commanding agents instead of executing yourself. That's what makes you senior—you coordinate instead of build. Junior people are getting shoved into this pattern whether they're ready or not.

Context switching is the new critical skill. AI made it mandatory for everyone.
